We may make these times better, if we bestir ourselves. Industry need not wish, and he that lives upon hopes will die fasting. There are no gains without pains.

Day 1 or 1/2 (Plane travel confuses me)

Plane travel. It's exciting - it's like your own little world up there. Everything is mini size, which makes me feel like a giant.

After catching my last view of Iowa for a long time I flew Des Moines to Dallas/Ft. Worth to London to Hamburg. Guess where the only airport was that had free Wi-fi? Des Moines - take that big cities. Everything went very routine, except the shooting pains I got in my face on each plane ride as we started to descend. You know that feeling where you think the back of your eyeball is going to explode and your sinus cavities simultaneously feel like a vacuum and are blocked with icy water and porcupine quills? Well, I do now, and it's not a very good one - apparently runs in the family. Nothing a little Excedrin can't dull! I love it how British Airways tries to be so much classier than American Airlines. First of all, everyone speaks in a British accent, which automatically makes them smart. Second, when you walk into the plane you're greeted with classical music playing like in an elevator. So. Classy. Even the water was classy - it was called "Decantae: The Prince of Natural Waters" and came in those plastic cups with the peel back metal lids that we drank juice from in elementary school. They really put on "Airs" if you know what I mean ;) Quite a change from the endless miles of cowboy stores in Dallas.
I got to Hamburg and (after being given the stink eye by the visa stamper guy who took like 2 minutes to make sure I was legit while I was standing there freaking out) was greeted by Maya, a friend from high school who was a foreign exchange student my senior year. After spending a little time in the city, we headed out to the smaller town she lives in outside the city. It's awesome, with a little shopping street and a pretty Lutheran church. I made my first successful European purchase - a pair of gloves for a Euro. Can't beat it! We spent the evening eating delicious traditional food of Hamburg that Maya's dad prepared - 2 kinds of sausage, potatoes with brown sugar, and amazing green cabbage. After the great food we played cards and chatted. It was basically the best - Maya and her family are such gracious hosts!! I'm excited to see the city tomorrow!
Gute Nacht from Germany,

  1. not too long! just what i want to know. :) i, too, have suffered the excruciating sinus pains of airplane descent. it is not fun, so i'm sorry you had to endure that! don't worry, it doesn't happen to me every time (and if i don't feel great anyway, i'll usually take a decongestant or something before getting on the plane just to make sure it doesn't happen). hope you have a great time in alemania! -rebecca

  2. I second Rebecca! Not too long at all! What's the point of a blog if you don't tell us all about it! :)

    Keep us posted, love Kristen
